Will iMovie HD6 and iDVD still work with the latest OS Sierra?
I want to continue using iMovie HD6 and iDVD still run/work if I were to upgrade to the latest operating system, macOS Sierra?

I suspect that iM6 will work with Sierra, as it does with El Capitan, but that has yet to be determined until users running Sierra weigh in. iDVD is a separate program that works independently of the operating system, and so if a video can be shared out, whatever operating system you use, it can be imported into iDVD.
Thank you for your reply Rich839. I will wait until users running Sierra (which must be a very new OS) can confirm if iM6 does work with it. I don't want to run the risk of updating only to find that it won't work! You say it is O.K. with El Capitan but I suppose there's no way I can just update to that. I'm still on Mountain Lion so I'm well behind.
Hi,
El Capitan is no longer sold by the Apple store, so you will need to buy it from a 3rd party vendor like ebay or Amazon. I just checked Amazon and it is selling El Capitan for $15.
iM6 will run on El Capitan, but you need to do some fiddling. Check out the following thread: Running iMovie HD 06 with El Capitan
Hi,
Rather than buy El Capitan I thought about partioning my main drive (as I've seen suggested by someone in the link you supplied) so I can keep OS 10.8.5 on that, then install OS Sierra only on the main partition.
There's something about a '.plist file which I don't understand, so I'd really appreciate your comment about this idea.
Hi,
In the link I gave you the instructions that you would be following are these:
I assume that you are asking about the info.plist file. I can't tell what specifically you want to know. Generally, a .plist file stores the settings for an app. What you would be doing is altering one of the settings for iM6 so that it will open in El Capitan. Once you open the info.plist file as instructed, change the setting as described and save it.
The problem with your thought about partitioning your main drive so you can keep OS 10.8.5 on it is that you will need to completely erase your main drive to do that. As an alternative, you might consider purchasing an external drive, formatting it for Apple, and putting your older operating system on that.
Hi,
I've still got an external drive with OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) on it so I thought I could use that for iMHD6 and my other old programs. I know that with Snow Leopard there is software that I cannot even use with Mountain Lion, so do you think this would be a good idea?
That sounds like it would work, as long as you can boot Snow Leopard on the external drive. Since you've already got the set up, copy your iM6 app over to the external drive and see if it will run on Snow Leopard. If it doesn't, you can try the workaround procedure that we discussed above.
I seem to recollect, however, reading a long time back, that iM6 had to be on your system boot drive. Not sure about that.
I got everything Snow Leopard running on the computer and by using iMHD6 and trying it out with some editing it does seem to work from the external drive. But when I tried to use it as the start up disk it just 'hung' and I had to turn the external drive off then turn the computer off (it wouldn't even re-start normally!)
What are your thoughts?
You may need to set up your external drive as a boot disk. But, this is territory with which I am not totally familiar because I have not done it. So perhaps others will weigh in here with some comment.
Although I can't Start Up from my 10.6 (Snow Leopard) external drive it's been working O.K. with iMHD6, but when I tried to use the GeeThree Slick STABILIZER - it's there but when I click on the 'apply' button it crashes. So obviously my 2012 computer won't allow it.
Do you or anyone know if there is an alternative Third Party Stabilizer software out there that I can use with iMHD6?
I have not used a 3rd party stabilizer with iM6, but I have heard of iStabilizer and fxStabilizer that you can google for more details.
iMovie 10.1.2 has a stabilizer feature. You might try importing your shaky clip into iM10, stabilizing it there, then sharing it out to your desktop where you can then import it into iM6 as a movie clip.
Thanks again for your help. I've started looking into the choices and I'll be deciding which is going to be the best, although I've read that the fxStabilizer is no longer available.
I think putting my clip/s into the latest version of iMovie (iM10 or whatever one comes with OS Sierra) and follow your instructions from there.
You are welcome.
Please post back if you find a stabilizer that works well. From what I have read, stabilizers at the delivery level are not very satisfactory.
Hi,
It is possible that iM6 will not operate on Sierra. You are the first who has tried it to post on this forum.
I'm still running El Capitan so can't do a test.
Did you remember to save the .plist after making the change? Also, I am running iM6.0.3, and I changed to 6.0.5. And I have iM6 on my boot drive.
If you can't get it to work, you could try this: Control-click on the iMovie6 icon in your Applications folder, then double click on Contents, then MacOS and then click on the iM6 file that is in the MacOS folder. That should open iM6 plus a little Terminal pop-up box which you will need to keep open (park it on your dock). At least, that procedure works in El Capitan.
Thank you for posting back, because your findings may affect one's decision whether to upgrade to Sierra at this time. Perhaps others who have tried to run iM6 on Sierra will weigh in.
Best,
Rich
